Secondary Science Education Program

This program leads to eligibility for teacher certification in Virginia and is available only to individuals holding a baccalaureate degree or completing requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Such candidates must meet the general education and subject-area requirements for teacher certification in Virginia and the following professional education sequence: ECI 301, 304, 413, 408, 360, 406, 454, 485. Students completing the secondary education endorsement program may count these courses in lieu of the normal upper-division general education requirements.


To complete the subject-area requirements, the student must pass with a C (2.00) or better the following biology courses: BIOL 115N, 116N, 290, 291, 292, 293, 303, 405W; 190 or 250; 308 or 221; 307, 330, 401, 420, 421, 431, 458, 473; and 103 or 315. Non-biology courses required are CHEM 115N-116N, 311, 312, 313; OEAS 110N or 111N; PHYS 111N; STATS 130M; and MATH 200.


A minimum of 128 semester hours and a cumulative grade point average of 2.70 are required for the secondary education option in the Bachelor of Science degree in biology.
