The function of the BSSF is to support faculty members in their various preparative needs.The functions are listed in approximate order of priority.

  1. Preparation of microbiological media, reagents, stains, and assisting in field oriented classes.
  2. Maintenance, subculture and/or preservation of microbial stock cultures utilized by the BSSF.
  3. Maintenance and scheduling of field vehicles.
  4. Procurement of supplies necessary to operate the BSSF.
  5. Accepting departmental deliveries and notifying faculty of such arrivals.
  6. Maintenance of glassware/chemicals/lab supplies utilized by the BSSF.
  7. Maintenance of equipment and laboratories utilized by the BSSF.
  8. Support of purchasing procedures adapted by department.
  9. Rectifying all departmental purchases with Accounts Payable.

Because of time, effort and space involved in fulfilling these functions, the BSSF CANNOT be utilized:

  1. To replace graduate teaching assistants or graduate research assistants.
  2. For the purpose of “setting up” a laboratory.
  3. For the purpose of running “dry labs”.
  4. For the purpose of doing research for faculty members.
  5. To run errands.
  6. As a stockroom (in Room 207).
