Dr. Andrew S. Gordon
Professor of Biological Sciences
Education:
Ph.D. Microbiology, 1982
University of Miami
B.A. Oceanography, 1977
Catholic University of America
Teaching Responsibilities:
Biol 315, General Microbiology
Biol 478/578, Microbial Ecology
Biol 479/579, Microbial Ecology Laboratory
Biol 632, Marine Microbiology
Research Interests:
My laboratory research is currently focused on metal-microorganism interactions with emphasis on the physiological responses of marine bacteria to elevated levels of metals, especially copper. We have described a unique response of marine vibrios to copper stress which involves excretion of an extracellular copper-complexing protein. We are currently characterizing additional copper ligands produced by marine bacteria. The lab is also involved in study of toxic dinoflagellates (Pfiesteria spp.) and their toxins.
