                  Then...                                               Now

Personal Background:

The third of four siblings, the older of two females represents my family position. Reared on a working farm where chores were many and rewards came by "goodies" and money. I was taught how to write checks and budget money for a yearly cycle at the age of twelve, the age at which I had my first "patch" of tobacco. As I aged, the "patch" became a field; my last field of tobacco was in 1964. My tobacco-money paid for my articles of clothing, my school lunches, entertainment, and whatever else came along that I did or could afford to do. Mom and dad provided for shelter, food, health services, and lots of family gatherings.

Greatest Achievement:

From my perspective, I have two great achievements. The first is living beyond the age of fifty and the second is being able to retain a part of my parents' original land. The second achievement has been made possible by the help of my sister and her husband. They maintain the yard and pastures, and prevent hunting and fishing. When they know that I am coming to the farm, the thermostat is adjusted for my comfort when I arrive. What a great family I have!

Greatest Regret:

My greatest regret is having a career that does not include the farm. The undeveloped space and the observations of nature provide tranquility that is neither found in a "drug" nor a "smoke."

Favorite Books:

There are two books that allow me to be child with the wisdom of an adult. Years ago The Little Prince, authored by Antoine De Saint-Exupery, stimulated visual learning and the development of the wonderment of why. In my life today, I keep the book where I can see it at least once a day. In my latter years Hope for the Flowers by Trina Paulus taught me that some have to give up the climb to fly.

Favorite Expressions:

Love many, trust few, and always paddle your own canoe.
Telling is not Teaching. Teaching is not Learning.
It's a hoot!

Professional Interests:

My personality, or whatever, requires that I experience some immediate gratification from the tasks that I attempt. At this point in my career, I am interested in learning styles, information-update, and the use of technology in the classroom.

Last Degree:

M.A.E. 1964. East Carolina College.

Teaching Responsibilities:
