Special Guest: Dr. Dick Gregory, Dean

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Congratulations to Soraya and Ian Bartol on the birth of their daughter 11 February! Parents and baby doing well. Kersten Wheeler, our new ecology specialist, was introduced and welcomed. Please contact Mary Hayward to schedule tasks for Kersten. The BSSF staff will be moving in MGB 304.

The format was open forum for questions to the Dean.

The first question was concerning the replacement of Bobby Powell: The Dean responded that the position would be filled but not with a person with the same skills as Bobby, the focus would be to support the core instrumentation unit in the new building. The new equipment would need a high level of maintenance.

Dr. Dauer brought up the question of research space in other areas around campus. Dr. Gregory stated that Bob Fenning was looking at spaces around Norfolk and the community surrounding the campus, and that it is possible space may be available in the Village. But, that we need to remember that we have to be willing to work with the needs of the Engineering College and do what is best for the University. The University will be buying property along the Elizabeth River and the plan is for a building there that will house CCPO, faculty from OEAS and any other marine related research. The plan is also to be able to dock the RV Faye Slover at that location. There will be a bond issue initiated for that project at the appropriate time.

The new building connecting MGB and the OCNPS building is on schedule, it is ready to go out for bids. The building should be completed by Fall of 2006. The moving of faculty and labs into that building will be done sequentially.

With regard to future hires of new faculty members-- departments will be responsible for one third of the start up costs, with the remaining two thirds coming from the Dean’s Office and Office of Research. The portion provided by the Department does not necessarily have to be in real dollars, it can be in some other format. If monies are provided by the Department they should come from the Indirect Funds in the overhead account.

After the Dean departed a discussion was held regarding the seminar series. Several suggestions were made to include reducing the number of seminars offered, having a separate ecology and biomedical series, scheduling at the appropriate time, establishing a fund with a known amount of dollars, and making it a graduate course so that students would have to sign up for them. Further discussions will take place in the future with the goal of having a new policy in place for Fall 2005.

Materials for annual evaluation of faculty are due this week. Early submission appreciated.

March 1st is the cut off date for making purchases, all prior commitments for purchases will be honored.

The next department meeting is Wednesday (NOT MONDAY) 2 March 1500h MGB 125.
