M.S. in Marine Chemistry, MIT, 1971
B.S. in Chemistry, Queens College, CUNY, 1968

Teaching Responsibilities:

Chem 703 Chromatographic Separations by HPLC and GC
Chem 704 Chromatographic Separations by HPLC and GC
Chem 423 Spectroscopic Methods of Analysis
Chem 424 Electrochemical Methods of Analysis
Chem 425 Analytical Separations Methods
Chem 498 Independent Study
Chem 127N Honors Foundations of Chemistry Laboratory

Research Interests:

My current research areas are:

  1. The impact of CO2 and CO photochemical production on oceanic and global carbon cycling.
  2. The impact of sequential photochemical degradation of DOM and microbial uptake of degradation products on oceanic and global carbon cycling.
  3. Composition of organic matter in the oceans.
  4. Environmental photochemistry of natural waters, including measurement of transient and stable species and studies of reaction mechanisms. This work involves the characterization of chromophores (humic substances) in natural waters and mechanisms for the formation of OH radicals, H2O2, carbonyl compounds, organic acids and photo-redox reactions of trace metals.
  5. Impact of enhanced UV-B radiation during the ozone hole on photochemical processes and microbial activity in Antarctic surface waters.
  6. Production of surface active polysaccharides by algae and bacteria and their role in particle formation in natural waters. Development/adaptation of analytical techniques for the measurement of trace organics and photochemically formed species in natural waters
