Position Title: Mosquito Control Aide

Starting Salary: $11.51 / hour

Hours: Approximately 32 hrs. per week, Mon. - Thurs.)

Description:
This employee will be working directly with the mosquito control biologist and her assistants to survey adult and larval mosquito populations and perform mosquito-borne disease surveillance. Duties include set-up and maintenance of different types of mosquito traps, mosquito speciation and preparation of specimens for arboviral isolation, collection and identification of mosquito eggs & larvae, collecting samples from sentinel chicken flocks and care and maintenance of the sentinel flocks.
Applicants should have the following knowledge, skills and abilities: 1. Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques, 2. Good fine-motor skills, 3. Ability to work independently with instruction from the biologist, 4. Ability to work outside during the summer months, 5. Ability to stoop, lift and carry at least 50 lbs. 6. Ability to stay on task for extended periods of time (required for laboratory work), 7. Knowledge of Access database and Excel spreadsheet operations is preferred, but not required.
Work will be divided between field and laboratory, so a valid Virginia or North Carolina driver's license and a good driving record are required, as is attendance at an employer sponsored defensive driving course. Training on collection methods, mosquito speciation, and specimen preparation will be provided.
