Please note that ODU has very specific guidelines for the use of these images

For example:
"The University Seal is reserved for special signage or document applications, such as official documents from the Office of the President. The Office of University Publications should be contacted prior to using the University Seal in any document."

Image Editors

Photoshop is great, but it is expensive.  Here are some excellent options for free and legal image editors.

Fauxto.com

In a word: Awesome

Prounounced like "photo," this site offers you a free image editor that is as close to photoshop as you will find (Yes, that means 'layers'!).  And it is WEB-BASED!  That means it is everywhere you are (as long as you have access to the internet). (more info)

Notes:

  1. Now you have to sign up to use it (it's still free, but you will need an email, password and nickname)
  2. It can be VERY slow to load, but once it's loaded, it's fine.

Paint.net

First off, I think this is Windows only... sorry mac and *nix.
This one can use plugins which is cool.  It also has layers

Notes:

  1. You also need to have ".NET Framework" installed to use this, check the website for details.

The Gimp/ Gimpshop

Another alternative image editor.  Gimp is great because it can be used on many platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux) but some people don't think the interface is that friendly.  That's where Gimpshop comes in.  It's essentially Gimp made to look like photoshop.  I've heard a lot of good things about these editors (and some bad, mainly the user interface).  Here are some resources to make things a little easier...

  1. more info about Gimp
  2. an unofficial Gimpshop help site

Krita

A linux-based painting and image editing application

 More

Others on the horizon

  • Picasa - From our friends at google.  Limited, but useful
  • XnView - A reasonably easy-to-use image editing program that works on Windows, Mac and Linux.
  • Canvas X - There is a free trial (but the program is far from free).  It also has a specific, science-focused package.
  • Photoshop Online - In development, should be out in ~6months (so maybe around August 2007).  It is reported that it will be free (but ad supported) but will likely have some limitations.

Page Layout Designers

Scribus

A program similar to Adobe Indesign for page layout design.

Scribus is an open-source program that brings award-winning professional page layout to Linux/Unix, MacOS X, OS/2 and Windows desktops with a combination of "press-ready" output and new approaches to page layout.

 OpenOffice

The biggest and the best, in terms of free alternatives to Microsoft Office.  You can download a single part or the whole suite, featuring: Writer (like Word), Impress (like Powerpoint), Math (like Excel), etc...
