I am interested in algal bloom formation, specifically with respect to physical forcing and nutrient loading. We currently operate a continuous monitoring station on the James River consisting of a YSI 6600 series sonde and an ISCO water sampler. By sampling at a high frequency over periods when blooms are likely to form, we can observe changes in nutrient concentrations, algal biomass, and physical parameters over timescales relevant to bloom formation. Once a bloom forms, nutrient uptake measurements and spatial mapping provide clues about nutrient utilization and physical transport mechanisms that control the distribution and growth of the bloom organisms.
