Abstract
It is now possible to operate networks of chemical sensors for extended periods of time in coastal waters. Sensors for nitrate, oxygen and carbon dioxide partial pressure are available that can operate for periods up to one year. In the Monterey Bay region, a network of 10 moorings that extend from the estuarine waters of Elkhorn Slough to the MSE mooring at 115 km offshore are equipped with chemical sensors. All telemeter data to the Internet where it is directly available to the community. In this talk, I'll review some of the science applications that are now possible using this network. A particular focus will be on the Land/Ocean Biogeochemical Observatory (http://www.mbari.org/LOBO) in Elkhorn Slough.
