The reality of water management: determining minimum water requirements for the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems. |
Abstract
The world is facing both a quantity and quality problem with freshwater resources. The developing field of ecohydrology addresses three important questions for the management of fresh water ecosystems: 1) how
little water is needed for ecosystem structure and function? 2) when is water needed seasonally? and 3) what duration of water is required? Global examples, with an emphasis on the subtropics and tropics, will be given to illustrate these points and to address development of multipurpose management of resources.
