Physics Demonstration Catalog
The structure of this demonstration catalog is based upon the Physics Instructional Resource Association (PIRA) Demonstration Classification Scheme. This classification scheme was chosen because it provides a framework of organization of all demonstrations, old or new.
Additionally, some entries in the catalog draw upon website links to other universities' demonstration catalogs, such as the excellent one created for the University of Maryland by their lecture demonstration facility. However, regardless of the source, local photographs of the cited demo items have been used when possible.
This demonstration catalog is a work in progress, and not all demonstrations found in other catalogs are listed here. New items will be listed as they are either locally created or demand dictates a listing. Thus, the items in our catalog are ones that we have the actual resources available to deliver for use upon request. |
Classification Format:The concepts and principles are divided into major groupings, with sub-groupings denoting specific concepts. The alphanumeric designator of each catalog entry reflects these parent groupings. |
Format of the Catalog
- Demonstration Name: This is either the name listed on a linked website source, a name created internally, or simply a descriptive name. In situations where multiple names exist, a common name has been used.
- Reference Number: Each catalog entry has a unique reference number assigned.
- Summary: This is purposely designed to be very short, listing only pertinent features, equipment items required, approximate time for setup, and in some cases, caveats of use of the demonstration.
- Location: Each demonstration is listed in only one location, even if it can be used to demonstrate several concepts. The additional concepts are indicated in the primary summary.
- Packages: Based on historical demand, several concept packages are listed for ease of use, and may be requested in entirety, vice as individual items.
