Application Requirements

Applicants may enter the Ph.D. program in industrial and organizational (I/O) psychology at either the bachelor's or master's degree level.  An applicant must present the following credentials as a minimum:

  1. Undergraduate courses in statistics and experimental psychology and 9 additional semester hours in psychology.
  2. Official scores on the Graduate Record Examination (taken within the last five years).  The GRE advanced test in psychology is required of applicants who have not obtained a degree in psychology.  It is recommended but not required for applicants who have obtained a degree in psychology.
  3. Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work.
  4. A brief statement outlining the student's personal goals and academic objectives.
  5. A writing sample, such as a research or course paper.
  6. Three letters of reference, at least two or which must be from former college or university teachers.
  7. Official scores on the TOEFL exam for applicants outside the United States.

Each year about 25 to 30 students apply for admission and about two to four students are admitted. Successful applicants have GRE total scores that typically exceed 1200 and international students have TOEFL scores above 600. Cumulative undergraduate grade point average typically exceeds 3.50. Test scores are not the only information considered when making admission decisions.
