New Faculty Appointments
With the start of fall semester, new full-time and part-time faculty are hired to teach, research and interact with our growing population of students. Where faculty are the root for building educational excitement in students, it is this wonderful, diverse population of young (and not so young) minds that inhabit the classrooms and laboratories at Old Dominion University that greatly enrich the teaching and research for all of us. The University is a wonderful place to mesh intellect, ability and endless possibilities.
The College of Sciences welcomes the following new professors:
Moskov Amarian, Associate Professor, Physics
Amarian earned his doctorate in 1991 from the Yerevan Physics Institute,
Armenia, and has held senior scientist positions in Amsterdam, Hamburg,
Armenia and Newport News (Jefferson Labs, formerly CEBAF). His research
interest include: Spin structure of the nucleon, where he played a leading
role for the First direct measurement of gluon polarization in the nucleon;
Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering, where he played a leading role in
the first measurement of Compton Scattering on quark level using polarized
positron beam of HERA accelerator at DESY to discriminate the interference
between background sub-processes and the process of interest; Measurement
of the new exotic baryon with pentaquark structure at HERMES

Moskov Amarian
Heather Beck, Lecturer, Mathematics and Statistics
Beck earned her master's degree in 1995 from Old Dominion University
and has taught in an adjunct position for the department for several
years before being appointed to a full-time position. Prior experience
includes teaching Algebra I, II and Calculus at the high school and
community college levels.

Heather Beck
Alexander Bochdansky, Assistant Professor, Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric
Sciences
Bochdansky earned his doctorate in 1997 at the Memorial University of
Newfoundland, Canada. Prior to coming to the department, he held postdoctoral
positions at the Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies and
at the Fish Ecology Laboratory at Queen's University. His research interests
include: ecophysiology of zooplankton; trophic interactions; heterogeneity
in the (feeding) environment; assimilation of organic nutrients; bioenergetics.
Alexander Bochdansky
Lisa Horth, Assistant Professor, Biological Sciences
Horth earned her doctorate in 2001 at Florida State University. Prior
to joining the department, she was a research associate for the University
of Virginia. Her research interests include: molecular variation in
color polymorphisms in nature; persistence of rarity in nature; effects
of population structure; evolutionary ecology, molecular and population
genetics, conservation biology, birds and fish.

Lisa Horth
Hutson Lindner, Lecturer, Mathematics and Statistics
Lindner earned his master's degree in mathematics in 1999 from Old Dominion
University. He has held an adjunct appointment with the department for
several years prior to be hired as a full-time instructor.
Hutson Lindner
Li-Shi Luo, Associate Professor, Mathematics and Statistics
Luo earned his doctorate in Physics in 1993 at Georgia Institute of
Technology, Atlanta. Just prior to joining the department, he was a
research fellow for the National Institute of Aerospace. His research
interests include: kinetic theory and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics,
lattice Boltzmann equation and CFD, complex fluids.

Li-Shi Luo
Michael Ott, Research Assistant, Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
Ott earned his doctorate in physical oceanography in 2000 at the University
of Victoria, British Columbia. Prior to joining the department, he has
held various teaching and research positions. His research interests
focuses in the Coastal Ocean Advances in Shelf Transport (COAST) program,
and he is examining the relationships between mixing, as measured by
Thorpe scales and thermal dissipation, and the location and strength
of fronts, jets and topography.

Michael Ott
Ruhai Zhou, Assistant Professor, Mathematics and Statistics
Zhou earned his doctorate in applied mathematics in 2001 from the University
of New Mexico. Before joining the department, he was a postdoctoral
research assistant professor for the Applied Mathematics Group, Department
of Mathematics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His
research interests include: numerical analysis, scientific computation,
numerical simulations of liquid crystalline polymer and nano-composite
material

Ruhai Zhou
Part-time, Adjunct, Visiting and One-year Appointed Teaching Faculty
We would like to extend a warm welcome to the part-time, adjunct, visiting and one-year appointed faculty (some who are retired from ODU) who fill an integral gap in the College by teaching many course and lab sections that otherwise would not be available to students.
