    Welcome to the 24th Edition

Taken aboard the Research Vessel Endeavor (based at the University of Rhode Island) after a strong storm in the Sargasso Sea (near Bermuda) in March 2004. Dr. Greg Cutter, Professor of Oceanography, was chief scientist and had graduate students and research technicians with him from Old Dominion University, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Stanford University, and the University of Southern California. The ODU team was studying the production of hydrogen sulfide by phytoplankton and its role in trace metal cycling (recent article in Quest).

The picture, taken by Dr. Cutter, was after the height of the storm. The CTD/rosette system (which is 2 m tall) is used for profiling the temperature, salinity, fluorescence, oxygen, and particle concentrations (transmittance) as a function of depth, and for taking water samples at selected depths.
