Adam Book Receives Award from A.L.A. Magazine

"Mathematics in Nature: Modeling Patterns in the Natural World," a book written by University Professor of Mathematics and Statistics John A. Adam, has been chosen for a 2005 Outstanding Academic Titles (OAT) award by Choice Magazine.

John A. Adam

The book, published in 2004 by Princeton University Press, explores Adam's interests in naturally occurring patterns -- such as in ice crystals or tree leaves -- and in the mathematics of design. In addition to writing the text, he took the photos.

The book has been popular with laymen and academics alike because of its poetic expression of science. The English-born Adam, who came to ODU 21 years ago from the faculty of a university in North Ireland, believes nature's patterns hold valuable lessons for mathematicians, engineers and architects, as well as for anyone who wants to better appreciate canyons, rainbows and other products of nature.

Choice is a publication of the American Library Association. Each year it reviews about 7,000 books and electronic media of interest to its readers, most who work in higher education. The magazine influences the acquisitions of many undergraduate libraries. About 10 percent of the works that are reviewed are chosen for OAT awards.
