| Back to Student NewsA Twenty-Year AnniversaryOn April 2, 2005, the Old Dominion PreHealth Club celebrated its 20th anniversary. Established in 1985 as a vehicle to assist students in reaching the highest level of opportunities that will insure them success in accomplishing their goals as future health care professionals, the organization continues on a strong path. Guest speaker for the occasion was Alvin J. Ciccone, M.D., F.A.A.F.P., A.B.F.P. Dr. Ciccone earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia, in 1964. He completed an internship at Norfolk General Hospital in 1965 and his residencies at Norfolk General Hospital and Robbins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Georgia. He currently serves as an Associate Professor of the Department of Family Medicine at the Eastern Virginia Medical School and is certified by the American Board of Family Practice. He joined the Sentara Medical Group in 1994 and is a family practice physician who has special interests in disease prevention and sports medicine. He serves as the Medical Director of the Emmy Award winning Family Health Project, an ongoing community service project featuring prime time health programs on various subjects impacting the general public. In 1988, he was elected Virginia's Family Physician of the Year. His motto speaks for his dedication to the healthcare profession: "Disease prevention and healthy habits play an integral role in saving lives and improving the quality of living." A presentation of awards was given at the ceremony for Volunteer Service, Academic Achievement, Community Service, Commitment to Excellence, Mentorship and Inspiration. Special Recognition was given to Alpha Epsilon Delta, the 2005-2006 Officers, PreHealth Club Alumni and the Advisory Committee.
