Welcome Class of 2017!

Congratulations on your admission to Old Dominion University! As an incoming freshman, here is a list of steps you should complete as soon as possible to ensure a smooth transition to ODU:

Get Connected:

  • Memorize Your UIN: Your UIN, or University Identification Number, is a unique number that you will use often at ODU. You will be asked for your UIN every time you meet with an advisor, so you should memorize this number as soon as possible.

  • Activate Your MIDAS Account: MIDAS (Monarch Identification and Authorization System) is a log-in ID and password management system that allows you to log in to ODU computer resources such as computer labs, Blackboard, email, etc. with the same user ID and password. Activating your MIDAS account also activates your ODU student email account. It is very important that you do this immediately as you will receive all official University communication via your ODU student email account.

    Prepare for Registration:

    • Register for PREVIEW: All incoming Freshman (0-23 credit hours and/or new high school graduates) are required to attend Orientation/PREVIEW. It is imperative that you register for PREVIEW as early as possible.

    • Complete the PREVIEW "Preparing for Registration" Modules:  When you register for PREVIEW, you will be given access to online Blackboard tutorials you should complete as soon as possible to ensure the smoothest possible transition to ODU.

    • Complete the Writing Sample Placement Test (WSPT):  You must complete the Writing Sample Placement Test (WSPT) before attending PREVIEW.  Instructions on how to access this online test are provided by the PREVIEW office when you make your reservations for Orientation/Preview.  You must complete the WSPT before attending PREVIEW or you will not be able to register for English or other courses that require placement into English 110C: Freshman Composition (such as BIOL 115).  This will make registration duirng PREVIEW difficult so please do not delay in completing this test once you have access to do so.  All incoming students must complete this assessment regardless of whether you have AP, IB, Dual Enrollment or Transfer credti for English Composition.  Questions and problems related to the Writing Sample Placement Test should be emailed to wspt@odu.edu.

    • Complete the Transition to College Inventory (TCI): You must complete the Transition to College Inventory (TCI) before attending PREVIEW. Instructions on how to access this online assessment are provided by the PREVIEW office when you make your reservation for Orientation/PREVIEW.

    • Review Your Transcript: You should check your academic transcript in Leo Online if you are expecting any AP, IB, Dual Enrollment or transfer credit of any kind. Review the PREVIEW Blackboard tutorial for directions on how to access your transcript. If your expected credit is not yet listed on your transcript, please bring a copy of any AP/IB scores or transcripts listing previously earned college credits to PREVIEW so your advisor can review these with you. This is very important to ensure that you do not register for classes you do not need.

    • Determine Your Math Placement:  As a science major you should take a math course in your first semester at ODU as well as every subsequent semester until you have completed the math requirement for your major.  As an incoming freshman your math placement is determined by your math SAT or ACT score.  If you would like to challenge your math placement based on your SAT/ACT score you should take the COMPASS Math Placement Test.  If possible, you should complete this test before attending Orientation/PREVIEW.  For more information or to schedule to take the COMPASS, contact the University Testing Center at 757-683-3697
