Transfer Course Equivalencies

General Information

The ODU Admissions Office evaluates transfer credits received from other institutions in order to apply them to a student's transcript. To see how credit from another institution will transfer to ODU, visit Monarch Transfermation, our online transfer equivalency database.  Once you enter the system you will be prompted to select the state, institution (for VCCS schools select All Virginia Cmty Col System), subject and the course number to see how credits you have earned or plan to complete will transfer from other institutions to ODU.

Evaluating Your Transcript

Transfer credits received from other institutions can appear on the ODU transcript in a number of ways.  For example:

BIOL 115N 4 credit hours Student received credit for BIOL 115N
BIOL 1 ELE 3 credit hours Student received three 100-level credit hours in Biology
1 HISP REQ
1 NSCP REQ
3 credit hours
4 credit hours
Student received credit and fulfilled general education requirements for History (HISP) and Natural Sciences (NSCP)

All students who transfer credit from other institutions to ODU have information regarding their transfer credit and how it was evaluated available through their student account in Leo Online. To find this information:

  • Log-in to Leo Online
  • Go to the Admissions Menu
  • Click on "Individual Transfer Credit Evaluation"

Please review this information thoroughly.  If you are missing any courses you completed at a previous institution please make sure you send an updated official transcript from your previous institution(s) to the ODU Admissions Office including your final semester of transfer courses.

But I Already Took That Course!!! Transfer Credit Reevaluation:

Sciences majors who wish to appeal transfer credit evaluations for courses already listed on their ODU transcript should email Tammy Hanna from their ODU student email account with the following information:

  • Name and UIN
  • The institution where you took the course and how it appears on your Individual Transfer Credit Evaluation in Leo Online
  • Anticipated ODU course equivalent
  • Course description(s) from the previous institution(s) along with any other supporting documentation, such as course syllabi.

After a decision has been made by the department for that course, you will be notified of the decision via email and any approvals will be sent to Transfer Evaluation Services to be updated on your ODU transcript.

Please contact Tammy Hanna, Transfer Advisor, with any further questions about transfer credits.

Courses Not Listed in Monarch Transfermation

If you are interested in transferring to ODU or are a current student who plans to take courses at another institution and have questions regarding transfer credit for courses that are not listed in Monarch Transfermation and how that transfer credit would be evaluated or transfer to ODU, please contact Transfer Evaluation Services.  Please email transfereval@odu.edu with the following information:

  • Name and UIN (if you have already been admitted to ODU)
  • Institution where you took the course
  • Course description(s) from the previous institution(s) along with any other supporting documentation, such as course syllabi.

You will be notified of the decision via email; for current ODU students any approvals will then be updated on your ODU transcript.
