General Education Requirements

What Are General Education Requirements?

General Education (GenEd) Requirements form the core curriculum for a baccalaureate degree at Old Dominion University.

The General Eduction Requirements:

   provide students with a solid background of knowledge in preparation for further studies in a major, minor, or focus area;
   broaden students' perspective on life, giving them a better understanding of our increasingly complex and globally oriented society;

help students develop critical thinking and analytical skills, and sharpen their ability to make reasoned judgements; (and)

   introduce the concept that learning does not happen by chance, but rather, it is the result of a life-long process requiring steady committment, discipline, and effort on the part of the learner;

General Eduction Requirements are divided into two categories; Skills & Perspectives

Within each category, students are provided with course options that address a specific skill or perspective to be achieved.

Although there isn't a specified time frame for fulfilling your GenEd requirements, many of the requirements are prerequisites for courses within a major, minor, or focus area.
