Research Proposal Submission
Research Proposal Submittal Forms (Blue Sheets) should be submitted to the Associate Dean for signature as described in the sections below. You are encouraged to present your Submittal Form in advance of the submission date as far as possible in case that I am away from the office for a few days. Remember that a short, descriptive abstract must accompany the Submittal Form. If there will be a short time between preparation and submittal to the granting agency, please contact the Associate Dean's Office ahead of time to ensure that someone will be available to approve the Blue Sheet when needed.
The standard indirect cost rate charged by the Old Dominion University Research Foundation is 43% of direct costs. All proposals should charge the normal allowable indirect cost rate for each granting agency. All proposals that carry an indirect cost rate of less than 43% should have accompanying information from the granting agency stating their policy governing this charge. Faculty members should also include purchased release time wherever possible and appropriate.
Standard Proposals
These proposals do not require any matching funds or other contributions and will require a minimum of time for approval. When the Submittal Forms are sent or brought to the Dean's Office, please make sure that instructions are provided on whether we should call the Principal Investigator or send the Form through the Campus Mail to the Pre-award Services Director after proposal approval.
Non-Standard Proposals
Faculty submitting applications requiring matching monies must complete and submit a copy of the form below. Since it will not be possible to provide matching funds for all proposed grant applications, faculty members are encouraged to submit this form before beginning the grant preparation process. Grant applications requiring matching funds will not be processed by the Dean's Office if a completed form is not submitted at least three weeks prior to the proposed grant submission date. Please include agency information pertaining to the matching fund requirement.
Departmental commitments to matching funds must be shown on the form that must be signed by the department chair. College matching funds will not be provided in the absence of a departmental commitment and will not, under most circumstances, exceed the departmental contribution. Proposals seeking matching funds for research equipment must show real promise for generating external research support. In assigning priority to such applications, the research funding history of the participating faculty will be considered. Grants to support the purchase of instructional equipment must fit the instructional goals and plans of the department, as evidenced by the financial participation of the department.
