| Setting the tone for future achievement, both Drs. Lisa Drake (Dept. OEAS Postdoc) and Martina Doblin (Dept. OEAS Research Assistant Professor) participated in a "Girls Can! Career Conference" at Indian Lakes Elementary School in Virginia Beach on Saturday January 20, 2001. Sponsored by the American Association of University Women and others, this workshop was designed to give fifth grade girls a chance to meet professional women working in fields that require a strong academic background, with an emphasis on math and science. Drake and Doblin presented an overview of what oceanography is, briefing the young students on day-to-day activities. They also made a short demonstration on ballast water transport of non-indigenous organisms and the regional and international relevance. What a great way to spark interest in science! |
