Distinguished Presidential Lecturer in Science

“Sustainable Seas – The Vision, the Reality”
Sylvia A. Earle, Oceanographer

Sylvia Earle, chair and founder of Deep Ocean Explorations and Research Marine Operations, an organization to design and consult on manned and robotic sub-sea systems, has served as the National Geographic Society’s 1998 Explorer in Residence, the Center for Marine Conservation’s Ambassador for the Oceans and spokesperson for Sea Wen.  Additionally, Earle is the leader of the Sustainable Seas Expeditions, a five-year study of the National Marine Sanctuaries sponsored by National Geographic and funded by the Goldman Foundation.  She has written more than 100 publications on marine science and technology, including the 1995 book Sea Change.
