Old Dominion University College of Sciences
Establishes three Employee Awards
The College of Sciences created its first hourly and staff employee Awards and Recognition Program.
Recently, departments submitted plans for rewarding and recognizing their hourly and staff employees. From these plans, the College created a master plan that was approved by Academic Affairs September 2001. The three awards are:
• Outstanding Performance AwardsImmediate or spot awards may be presented any time during the year. Outstanding Performance Awards may be presented quarterly (if desired). Employee of the Year Award will be presented annually in May and nominations may be taken from the pool generated by the other two award categories. Any faculty, student, staff member or supervisor may nominate someone. Nominations should be made to the department chair.
• Immediate or “Spot” Awards
• Employee of the Year Award

Type of Award Given: Cash, Gift Certificate and/or Recognition Leave
The College of Sciences has established this blanket award to be used by the College of Sciences’ departments at an amount up to $250 or a flexible combination of cash, gift certificate, paid University parking fees or up to two days leave per calendar year or some combination not exceeding the amount of the designated total award (up to $250).
Nominations can be made at any time, and awards may be made at any time,
but no more than one award per quarter will be given (suggested months
are March, May, September and December).
This is an award for departments to use to reward employees for outstanding
team efforts, above and beyond the call of duty, special one-time projects,
employee appreciation, etc.)
The Immediate or Spot Award is designed to provide immediate recognition to a Classified and Hourly employee for the completion and appreciation of performing a special project or event, or for exemplary effort to ensure customer service, manage crisis, outstanding team efforts, or bringing organization to a needed area. Examples are: covering a position during a vacany, organizing and seeing an extra project through to its end (hosting workshops or conferences), setting up special data files, organizing department archives, or for any other significant accomplishment of someone for performing above and beyond the individual’s normal responsibilities.
Type of Award Given: Cash, Gift Certificate and/or Recognition Leave
The College of Sciences has established this blanket award to be used by the College of Sciences’ departments at an amount between $250 - $500, or a flexible combination of cash, gift certificate, paid University parking fees or up to three days leave per calendar year or some combination not exceeding the amount of the designated total award ($250 - $500).
Frequency of Award: One award, given twice a year (suggested: November and May)
The Outstanding Performance Award, awarded to Classified and Hourly Employees, will be granted for performance that results in significant benefit to the department, College or University (i.e. specific achievements that improved services, processes, time or money savings, avoidance of a disruption in service or responsibilties, or improvement of customer service). The performance is a sustained, long-term accomplishment or service within the realm of the employee’s job, or the employee has taken on an additional assignment for a lengthy period of time (6 months to a year).
Type of Award Given: Cash, Gift Certificate and/or Recognition Leave
The College of Sciences has established this award at an amount between $250 - $1,000, or a flexible combination of cash, University reserved parking space, gift certificate or up to five days leave per calendar year or some combination not exceeding the amount of the designated total award ($250 - $1,000).
Frequency of Award: One award, annually
The College of Sciences Employee of the Year Award, given to a Classified
and Hourly Employee, will be granted for performance that results
in significant benefit to the department, College or University (i.e. specific
achievements that improved services, processes, time or money savings,
avoidance of a disruption in service, or improvement of customer
service). The performance is a sustained, long-term accomplishment
or service within the realm of the employee’s job, or the employee
has taken on an additional assignment for a lengthy period of time (6
months to a year).
The performance must be specific; it must result in a demonstrated
significant benefit to the department, College or University; it
must be sustained on a long-term basis (6 months to a year).
