Acting Chair for OEAS

Dr. Thomas Royer, Slover Professor of Oceanography and Eminent Scholar, will serve as Acting Chair of the Department of Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences beginning Jan. 1, 2002.
He is also chairing the Boat Committee that is overseeing the construction of the College of Sciences new research vessel, Fay Slover.

Royer came to Old Dominion in 1996 from the University of Alaska where he currently holds professor emeritus status. His experiences include researching at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and at Texas A & M University. He served as Chancellor’s Faculty Associate for Research at the University of Alaska Fairbanks from 1992-1993.  From 1983 through 1989, he served his profession as associate editor for the Journal of Geophysical Research.

His special research interests include mesoscale ocean circulation with emphasis on sub-polar gyres, and coastal boundary currents.  He earned his doctorate from Texas A & M University in Physical Oceanography in 1969.
