Old Dominion Chapter of the Society of Physics Students Receives an "Outstanding Chapter" Award The Society of Physics Students (SPS) is a professional association especially designed for students. Membership, through collegiate chapters, is open to anyone interested in physics. The only requirement for membership is that a person be interested in physics. The Old Dominion University SPS chapter has had members from other disciplines such as chemistry, biochemistry, engineering, geology, mathematics, etc.
The purpose of the SPS is to introduce students into contributing members of the professional community. This organization offers students the opportunity to practice effective communication and personal interactions, leadership, build a network of contacts, present scholarly work at professional meetings and in journals, and perform outreach services to the campus and local communities.
On October 30, 2001, Old Dominion’s SPS chapter was presented an Outstanding Chapter Award for 2000-2001 certificate at the annual Pumpkin Drop. This is a notable accomplishment because less than 5% of SPS chapters nationwide are so honored, fewer than one per state. The selection is based on the depth and breadth of SPS activities conducted by the chapter in areas as physics research, public science outreach, physics tutoring programs, hosting and representation at physics meetings, and providing social interaction for chapter members.
