Dr. R. James Swanson, professor of biological sciences and director of the Mouse Embryo Development and Gross Anatomy Laboratories, joined the faculty at Old Dominion University in 1975. He earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from Wheaton College in 1969, his master's in exercise physiology from Florida State University in 1972, and his doctorate in biological sciences from Florida State University in 1976. In 1985, in earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from Old Dominion University.

He teaches many of the human anatomy and physiology classes and labs at the graduate level. His central research interests are mechanism of mammalian ovulation using a rabbit model; gamete interaction, early embryo development, and embryo transfer using a mouse model; ROS, antioxidant enzymes, and hypoxia in human sperm function; and light-and electron-microscopic morphologic evaluation of human spermatozoa.
