Outstanding Laboratory Instructor 2002 Thurman O. Hughes, III (better known as Trey) is not only the College of Sciences recipient of this award but the University recipient of this award as well!
A native Virginian, Trey has always been a gifted and intelligent student his entire educational career at Old Dominion where he entered as a freshman. His near 4.00 GPA in his major and minor, physics and mathematics respectively, proves it. Trey will receive his doctorate in physics this summer. His physics emphasis is a theoretical field, astrophysical modeling.
Over his graduate years, Trey has taught more than 50 separate laboratory sections in Physics 103N, 104N, 111N, 112N, 231N, 232N. His teaching evaluations are truly outstanding. He has a following of motivated young persons who go out of their way to praise his efforts. He has been cited as a born teacher giving up many hours of his time to further instruct one-on-one those who seek him out.
Trey has written a new laboratory manual for the introductory astronomy course. He has computerized the astronomy laboratories developing new experiments and imported appropriate level experiments developed nationwide. He has designed and instrumented a small observatory on the roof of the ocean/physics building and developed the CCD imaging system for the undergraduate astronomy labs.
Trey is a highly motivated individual who is also shy and quiet. (He would not allow his picture to be taken and we respect his wishes.)
Congratulations to you, Trey!
