The Launch of R/V Fay Slover
On September 10, 2002 Gladding Hearn Shipbuilders in Somerset, Mass., launched the College of Sciences new research vessel, the R/V Faye Slover. The vessel will be turned over to Old Dominion University this month, following sea trials. A formal christening is planned for October 1 at Nauticus.
The new $1.3 million vessel is named for the original benefactor of the university’s oceanography program. A 1967 gift from Mrs. Slover established an endowment that supports three Samual L. and Fay M. Slover chairs at Old Dominion. Col. Slover was a founder of The Virginian-Pilot newspaper and former chairman of the board.
You won’t want to miss our farewell to the R/V Linwood Holton and it’s retiring captain in the next edition of Scire.
