Major Accomplishments 2002-03


  • Took delivery and held the christening of the 55-foot Research Vessel Fay Slover, the Department of Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences' new research vessel

  • Began construction of the new Engineering and Computational Sciences Building that will house several College of Engineering and Technology laboratories, the Office of Computing and Communications Services, and the Departments of Computer Science and Mathematics & Statistics

  • Secured funding through the Education bond referendum for future College of Sciences building projects, such as a laboratory science building

  • Dr. Cynthia Jones was named Virginia Scientist of the Year in recognition for her outstanding work and is one example of the great research done within the college

  • Received or have pledges for over $5.8 million for research chairs, professorships and scholarships

  • Taught 38,182 undergraduate students

  • Taught 3,305 graduate students

  • Generated $11 million in research funds
