ODU Biology Student Awarded Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship
Candice Gabriel of Norfolk, who will receive her bachelor's degree in biology at Old Dominion University's May Commencement was awarded a Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship for 2003-04. She will receive $8,000 toward pursuit of a medical degree at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Gabriel, who has a 4.0 grade point average, was also presented an Outstanding Scholar Award from ODU's Alumni Association May 8 as the graduate with the highest grade point average from the College of Sciences.
She was also honored as the second place winner of the Kaufman Prize, named for the late Charles Kaufman in the amount of $2,000. Kaufman was well known in Hampton Roads as a community leader, philanthropist and friend to Old Dominion. Following Kaufman's example, prize winners must have demonstrated sustained participation in leadership of campus or community groups, an outstanding record of volunteer activities, academic achievement or the achievement of a major task affecting the campus or the community.
Phi Kappa Phi, headquartered on the Louisiana State University campus in Baton Rouge, La., is one of the oldest honor societies dedicated to the recognition and promotion of academic excellence in all fields of higher education. Fifty-two fellowships and 30 awards of excellence are awarded annually.
Criteria for selection include superior undergraduate academic performance, leadership and service on campus and in the community, and evidence of potential success in graduate study.
Gabriel was highly praised by those who provided recommendation letters for her application. One person said she consistently asked intelligent, thought-provoking questions, which showed she thought about the material in a way no other student did. Another spoke of her strong commitment to helping others through her volunteer work. Gabriel attended Granby High School. Her parents are Louis and Christina Gabriel.
