College of Science's Research Professor Dies

Glenn F. Cota, research professor in the Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography, died on July 2, 2004. He was 53.

Cota, a native of Hastings, Mich., was a biological oceanographer with an emphasis on polar research. He joined CCPO in 1995. He earned his doctorate from Dalhousie University in 1983 and did postdoctoral fellowships at Bedford Institute of Oceanography and the University of South California.

As a researcher, he was funded by NSF, ONR and NASA. He was a member of NASA's SeaWiFS and SIMBIOS science teams, the SeaWiFS bio-optical algorithm development group, and NASDA's (Japan) ADEOS/OCTS and ADEOS II/GLI science teams. He was a member of the American Geophysical Union, The Oceanographic Society, the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, the Phycological Society of America, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Cota received the U. S. Antarctic Service medal in 1985.

Not only was Cota a reseacher, he was a family man with four children. Cota was involved with his children's sporting activities, including serving as coach. He was known as "Coach Cota" to many children in the Norfolk community.
