Mark Butler, professor of biological sciences, was quoted in the November 21, 2004 Daily Press story, ‘X-43A flight is a chance for scientists to reminisce.’ He said, “Saving the coral reefs is the equivalent to trying to save the rain forest.”

Ann Gargett, Slover professor of oceanography, had her research on Langmuir supercells published in the Dec. 10th issue of Science, which was covered by The New York Times on December , 2004. To view the article online, go to http://www.nytimes.com. Registration, although free, is required when you log in. Gargett works in the Center for Physical Oceanography. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Manitoba and doctorate from the University of British Columbia.

Bryan Porter, associate professor of psychology, was quoted in the November 20, 2004 Daily Press story, ‘Holiday via highway.’ He said, “When people are traveling during the holidays…there are increased odds of minds tending to wander. Fatigue increases, and so do distractions, like listening to books on tape, talking on the cell phone and talking to passengers.”

Thomas C. Royer, Slover Professor of ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences, was quoted in the December 19, 2004 Daily Press concerning his seven-year project researching the circulation of Pacific Ocean waters from Alaska to Hawaii, “The total amount coming off the ice fields in Alaska is about 25 to 50 percent more water than the Mississippi River puts out each year.”
