PORTRAIT DEDICATION

A portrait of Clifford L. Adams, the founder and first chair of the Department of Physics at Old Dominion University, was dedicated at a reception on Nov. 14th in the atrium of the Oceanography and Physics Building .

Professor Adams founded the Department of Physics in 1960, two years after he joined the Old Dominion faculty. He also helped organize the ODU Research Foundation, and was its first executive director from 1966-1974. During 1973-74, he held the title of Associate Provost for Research and Sponsored Programs, and later in the 1970s he returned to the physics department to help gain approval of a doctoral degree program.

On the state level, Adams served as chair of the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia’s Research and Development Advisory Committee and was president of the Virginia chapter of the American Association of Physics Teachers.

He retired in 1979, and a decade later established the Clifford L. and Lillian R. Adams Scholarship for physics students. He died in 1996.
