Especially for Internship Directors

Q.   What should I know about your program?

These 5 facts:

  1. The Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology is a university-based doctoral program, jointly sponsored by :

Old Dominion University; Norfolk State University; and Eastern Virginia Medical School

Each partner is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The program has been accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1982, originally as a Psy.D. program and now as a Ph.D. program.

  2. Ours is a scientist-practitioner model; we now award the Ph.D. degree.

  3. Research is an integral component of the Virginia Consortium Program and an empirical dissertation is a degree requirement. We work to fund all of our students; put another way, we admit only students we would fund. Students are funded by assistantships,  teaching and research.

  4. We admit  6 students per year, even though faculty numbers 26. We believe this is evidence of a strong commitment to training that suggests our students will be well prepared for internship. Because our students are well known to faculty and supervisors, you can expect information provided by the Virginia Consortium to be direct and pertinent.

  5. Practicum hours reported by a Virginia Consortium student are an exact record of his or her hours of clinical experience. Hours are summarized from individual, documented reports that follow APPIC guidelines. Supervisors evaluate students twice during each practicum; and before the student can be credited with the experience, the supervisor must sign off on both reports. Hours reported by Virginia Consortium students are, therefore, straightforward and uninflated.

Q.   Anything else I can take back to an evaluating committee?
