Master of Science Programs in Biology
Does dipping for Daphnia in the Great Dismal Swamp strike your fancy? How about analyzing allozymes? Entomologyzing ants? Curious minds are pursuing these and colonies of other studies in the Master of Biological Sciences programs at Old Dominion University The Department of Biological Sciences is one of the largest on campus with over twenty-five full-time faculty members, over 100 graduate students, and nearly 700 undergraduates. Adjunct faculty from the Eastern Virginia Medical School (FVMS) share their expertise here, and joint appointees with the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences challenge students to view biological sciences from new perspectives. Four degree programs are available in the department: Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, Doctorate in Biomedical Sciences, and Doctorate in Ecological Sciences.
Master's students and professors test theories and applications in the modern Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building, the Applied Research Laboratory, Benthic Ecology Laboratory, and the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine at EVMS. Classes use special facilities within the department such as a well-equipped electron microscope suite, animal care facilities, radiobiological assay and environmental pollution laboratories, a quantitative fisheries laboratory, plant and animal cell culture laboratories, a greenhouse, biotechnology laboratories, a wetlab, an herbarium, an animal collections museum, and a computing center. In addition, excellent opportunities exist for research and instruction off-campus at the department's Blackwater Ecological Preserve and through associations and agreements with EVMS, The Virginia Coast Reserve-Long Term Ecological Research Site, The Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences Eastern Shore Marine Laboratory, and other regional agencies and facilities.
