Welcome to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics!

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics holds a unique distinction of being the only department in the Commonwealth of Virginia to offer B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computational and Applied Mathematics. As computational mathematics, or computational science in general, plays a greater role in every branch of the science, the department is equipped with programs which are designed to produce computational and applied mathematicians, statisticians and teachers with analytical and computational skills necessary to meet the challenges of the modern day society. The department is currently supported by 19 graduate faculty who conduct research and regularly publish their research articles in the top-tier journals. The department has an active research program with ongoing grant support from NASA and NSF. Recent figures released for FY2011 show that the department ranked 74th nationally in federal R&D expenditures. The department is also supported by 21 instructional faculty who provide quality education in our freshmen/sophomore level courses. Our instructors are committed to help students succeed.

Thus the educational experience at Old Dominion University is contemporary and challenging with a strong emphasis on computational and applied mathematics and statistics to current day problems.
