SIAM Student Chapter at Old Dominion University

SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics: www.siam.org) is an international organization which hosts publications and conferences in a wide range of fields.  It's goal is to promote interactions between mathematics and other scientific and technological communities.  

As a student chapter, we aim to:

  • to provide a forum for the discussion of applied mathematics research at ODU,
  • to promote interactions between undergraduate, graduate students, and researchers in applied mathematics
  • to make ODU students aware of prizes, conferences,and other opportunities offered by SIAM.
The Bylaw of the Chapter describes in more details the purpose and the activities of our Student Chapter of SIAM.

Current Events

Currently, we hold our monthly meetings in conjunction with Math Stat Club Math/Stat club.

We will be holding our 5th Annual Mathematics Awareness Conference on Saturday, March 24, 2012. The Conference will take place on ODU's Norfolk Campus, in the Oceanography and Physics Building, from 10 am to 5 pm. Those who decide to attend will have the opportunity to interact with our three guest speakers. Our first guest speaker is Dr. Suzanne Lenhart, Professor of Mathematics at University of Tennessee. Additionally, we will have Dr. Sastry Pantula, who is the Director of the Division of Mathematical Sciences at National Science Foundation. Finally, our guest alumni speaker is Dr. Bonita Saunders, who works for National Institute of Standards and Technology. The conference will also be comprised of many small presentations that will be given students and scientists doing research in mathematics, statistics, and the various applications thereof.

What are you working on? Interested in talking about it? The Conference provides a great opportunity for students to both speak about their research and learn about the work being done by their peers. If you'd be willing to give a talk about your research and the math behind it, or would just like to attend the conference, please contact us.

Joining

If you are interested in joining the ODU SIAM chapter, email us. We are in the process of setting up a mailing list.  Until then, a simple email to us will get you CC'd on all announcements and information.

Membership to SIAM itself is free to all students of ODU, and highly encouraged.  All members will receive monthly copies of SIAM News, and a yearly copy of SIAM Review.  Members are also granted discounts on SIAM books, and journals.  To find out more and sign up, please look into SIAM student memberships.
