Simulation Research in Department of Mathematics and Statistics

Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Old Dominion University plays an integral part in University's campus-wide initiative to promote its research in Simulation and Modeling. Department offers an MS degree as well as a PhD degree in Computational and Applied Mathematics. Several faculty members in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics conduct their research in computational Simulation and Modeling and Statistical Modeling. More specifically, our simulation faculty currently conduct research in the following areas:
  • Computational fluid dynamics, nonlinear heat conduction problem, computational aeroacoustics, complex fluids, nematic polymer dynamics, non-equilibrium hypersonic flow, hydrodynamic stability.
  • Computational and mathematical biology, mathematical modeling of tumor growth, cancer biology, bioinformatics, optimal atomic configurations of biomolecules,
  • Computational Statistics, multivariate analysis, regression diagnostics, probability theory.
To find out more about this research, please visit the homepages of simulation faculty members listed below. The department is also the sponsoring organization for the Student Chapter of SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics), the leading professional organization for computational and applied mathematicians. VMASC (Virginia Modeling Analysis and Simulation Center), NIA (National Institute for Aerospace) and ODU's Center for Computational Sciences serve as associate sponsors for the chapter. To promote the interdisciplinary research among the students affiliated with these four organizations, the chapter holds regular monthly meetings. In addition, the chapter also holds a separate meeting in April and another in November. At the April and November meetings, in addition to invited lectures, students from the four organizations will have an opportunity to present their research in the areas of statistical simulation, computational mathematics in simulation and modeling. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics also offers a certificate in Simulation. In order to obtain the certificate in simulation, a student must complete four graduate courses that include MSIM 601 (Introduction to Modeling and Simulation). MSIM 601 is offered by Department of Engineering Management and System Engineering. Student may select three other simulation courses from the lists below.
