Catalog Descriptions for Internship and Practicum and Clinical Seminar

PSYC 368. Internship in Psychology. 3 credits. For ODU Psychology majors only. Students engage in academically relevant work related activities in non-clinical settings. Available for pass/fail grading only. Students should work with Career Management to identify their placement in the semester prior to enrollment. (Qualifies as a guaranteed practicum experience.) A maximum of 6 credits of PSYC 368 and/or 369 can be counted towards the major in Psychology.

PSYC 369. Practicum in Clinical Psychology. 3 credits. Co-requisite: PSYC 371 Clinical Supervision in Psychology. For ODU Psychology majors only. Students engage in academically relevant work activities in clinical settings. Available for pass/fail grading only. Students should work with Career Management to identify their placement in the semester prior to enrollment. Instructor approval is required prior to registration. (Qualifies as a guaranteed practicum experience.) A maximum of 6 credits of PSYC 368 and/or 369 can be counted towards the major in Psychology.

PSYC 371. Clinical Supervision in Psychology. 1 credit. Co-requisite: PSYC 369, Practicum in Clinical Psychology. Students doing practica at designated clinical placements must also enroll in this course taught by a clinical faculty member. This seminar addresses the special issues in the areas of safety, confidentiality, and professionalism that arise in clinical settings. Students doing non-clinical internships may also enroll in the course.A maximum of 2 credits of PSYC 371 can be counted towards the major in Psychology.

Pre-requisites for Internship/practicum:

Major in psychology

14 hours of psychology

Junior Standing

Completion of Psyc 317 with 318W completed or in progress

Interview with the Career Management Center for all students and interview with the Department supervisor for Clinical Practica students only

Signed Permission of the Department supervisor for clinical practica students only; Career Management Center signed approval for internship students. Get the form online.

Students should first work with the CMC to choose potential opportunities before approaching the Department supervisor

The Department supervisor has the final approval on valid Internship sites.
